Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington & 9th Wonder debuted their new supergroup, Dinner Party, with their first single, “Freeze Tag” ft. Phoelix.

Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington & 9th Wonder have come together to form a new supergroup by the name of Dinner Party, and to kick things off, they've dropped their first single as a collective called "Freeze Tag" featuring Chicago artist Phoelix. According to Rolling Stone, "the core idea [of the group] was to tap into elements of jazz and soul, but root the new group in hip-hop." As a debut effort, then, "Freeze Tag" goes above and beyond. All four of the new group's members, alongside Phoelix, blend together so effortlessly to produce some pure, groovy magic.

Despite the smooth, easy-riding tone of the music, though, the lyrics themselves are much more hard-hitting. On the hook, Phoelix croons about experiencing police brutality, contrasting the lyrical content drastically with the instrumental. “They told me put my hands up behind my head,” he sings. “I think they got the wrong one/I’m sick and tired of runnin’/I’ve been searching where the love went.”

"Freeze Tag" is the first single off Dinner Party's forthcoming debut self-titled album, which is set to drop on July 10th.

Quotable Lyrics

But I think I'm 'bout to cut a rug
I been waitin' on the summer
Soul lookin' back and wonders
"How we 'posed to get from under?"
