Smokepurpp has earned a fair number of detractors since first arriving on the scene, likely due to his role in popularizing the divisive SoundCloud rap movement. Yet the rapper, who recently dropped off his brand new album Florida Jit last night, continues to push himself artistically. Every so often, Purpp proves he can put in work on the mic if he so chooses -- perhaps we have the commanding presence of Denzel Curry to thank for that, or perhaps Ronny J's haunting instrumental sparked something spooky in the youngster.
In any case, "I'm Him" is easily Purpp's show and quite possibly one of the best technical performances of his career thus far. Look, he's not exactly firing off dazzling punchlines but that's not what we listen to Smokepurrp to hear. We want the charisma, the ignorance, the debauchery. Especially when he's packaging it all together with a dexterous flow, going so far as to outpace Zeltron's own contribution. In truth, the only criticism off the top is that Denzel's verse is way too short -- though Purpp's come-up as a SoundCloud rapper means no song can run over three minutes long.
