The last time Jay Z acquired an alcohol brand, we all got an earful of branding in the form of a truly terrible pun that graced (or besmirched?) his and Beyoncé's "Drunk In Love," but with his latest acquisition, he'll have a much harder time incorporating the brand name into some wordplay. If I do say so myself, "Armand de Brignac," the luxury champagne brand he just bought, would be much more difficult to name-drop than his cognac, D'Usse.
The New York Times reports that the Hov-owned Sovereign Brands has acquired the brand of bubbly, and includes a statement from the company:
“We are proud to announce that Sovereign Brands, a New York-based wine and spirits company owned by the Berish family, has sold its interest in the Armand de Brignac (‘Ace of Spades’) Champagne brand to a new company led by the globally renowned Shawn ‘Jay Z’ Carter.”
With that "Ace Of Spades" translation in mind, we can safely say Jay referenced the champagne (not by name) in "Show Me What You Got."
