The Broadway musical loosely based off Tupac's life will be short-lived. "Holler If You Hear Me", which was inspired by the late Pac, hit Broadway this past June, but reports now say that musical will come to end after just six weeks of performances, with the last show on Sunday. Apparently it's not selling enough tickets to fill up the seats.
Lead producer, Eric L. Gold released a statement saying, "I was unable to sustain this production longer in order to give it time to bloom on Broadway." The New York Times has stated that the Tupac-inspired musical is "one of the worst-selling musicals in recent years." Last week alone the show only managed to sell 45% of the tickets, and grossed $154,948. Critics have been equally unimpressed with the show.
"We are so proud to be a part of this ground-breaking production. The cast, musicians, production and creative teams gave more than just their professional excellence but contributed their passion as well. My hope is that a production of this caliber, powerful in its story-telling, filled with great performances and exciting contemporary dance and music will eventually receive the recognition it deserves," said Gold. "Tupac’s urgent socially important insights and the audiences’ nightly rousing standing ovations deserve to be experienced by the world."
