As reported by TMZthe New York Giants 6th Round draft pick Corey Ballentine was involved in a shooting that left him injured. Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, stated that Ballentine was injured in an off-campus shooting that killed junior defensive back, Dwane Simmons. He was 23 years old. The school says Ballentine is expected to make a full recovery and that his gunshot wound is non-life threatening. He should be back on his feet in a couple of weeks. The Giants drafted Ballentine with the 180th overall pick in the NFL Draft on Saturday, and the shooting happened early Sunday morning, according to the media site.

In a statement regarding the shooting, the Giants said they "are aware of the tragic situation and continue to gather information. We have spoken to Corey, and he is recovering in the hospital. Our thoughts are with Dwane Simmons' family, friends and teammates and the rest of the Washburn community." According to Fox News, Washburn President Dr. Jerry Farley said Simmons was killed in a “senseless act." “Both Dwane and Corey have been great examples and representatives of the football team and of Washburn University in general,” Farley said in a statement. “This was a terrible way to end a day which should have been a day of celebration and a day to look forward to Dwane's upcoming year at Washburn and the beginning of Corey's professional career.”
