Yelawolf has been a staple of Shady Records for years, releasing some of his best work with Eminem as his mentor. This summer, the rapper told the world that he was departing from the label, speaking favourably about his time with Shady. The culmination of his time at the imprint came last night with the arrival of Trunk Muzik 3, a project that Yela had been teasing for quite some time. At the beginning of the year, the Alabama rapper released a good number of freestyles, shaking up the game by calling out people like Post Malone and G-Eazy. Catfish Billy released a couple of singles before officially dropping TM3 and finally, we can listen to the album in full.
Collaborating with Machine Gun Kelly, DJ Paul and others, Yela gets rowdy on this project. During an era where everybody seems to be spitting low-energy bars, Yela is a breath of fresh air. The artist comes through with so much grittiness in each new lyric, hitting us hard with aggressive raps and ensuring that he makes a true impact.
With Yelawolf now no longer working under Shady Records, it will be interesting to keep an eye on what he has planned for the next year. Do you think we'll be seeing more new music from him? As you ponder Yela's future, check out our new feature on the selected history of "country rap."
