Back in April, we reported that Jay-Z & Roc-A-Fella Records were subjected to a $100,000 extortion plot at the hand of one of Jay's old sound engineers Chauncey Mahan. The case was ultimately dropped by Hova after he set up a sting operation in which his people met Chancey at a storage facility in the San Fernando Valley only to have the LAPD swoop in and seize the boxes of master recordings that the extortionist held for ransom.
TMZ now reports that Mahan is back with a vengeance. The producer and engineer says in a new lawsuit that he was a key element and creator of six Roc-A-Fella Records releases during his tenure with the company in the late 1990s and early 2000s and was instrumental in shaping the sound of some of the imprint’s best-selling releases, including Jay Z’s Vol. 3... The Life And Times Of S. Carter and The Dynasty Roc La Familia. In return for his hard work, Mahan wants co-ownership of the music's copyright and, in accordance, the right to claim the masters back into his possession.
If Mahan has the records and co-ownership returned to him, he'll likely offer them back to the company in return for a sizable fee.
