The minimum age to purchase tobacco products right now is eighteen in the United States but if Mitch McConnell has anything to say about that, it will be upped soon. McConnell introduced his intention to process the legislation change last month but the wheels have finally been put in motion this week. The Tobacco Free Youth Act will strike down on anybody under the age of 21-years-old who is trying to purchase cigarettes.
During his address, McConnell said, "A new age, nationwide, for purchasing anything classified as a tobacco product. Cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vapor products, and everything else. It shouldn’t be 18 any longer. It should be 21." This exact conversation has been brought up for years and finally, something is being done to prevent youth from getting addicted to tobacco products.
According to Uproxx, the bill would go into effect "no later than 180 days after the date of enactment" if it gets passed by Congress and if President Donald Trump signs off on it.
If you're not yet in your twenties and you're smoking on the regular, you might want to consider finding an alternative because soon, you likely won't be able to buy your cancer sticks.
Do you think this is the right move? There have been talks to raise the minimum age even higher while others prefer to keep it at eighteen.
