The Tony Awards isn't where hip-hop heads typically get their Sunday rap fix but, tonight, Tip & LL Cool J brought a classic Broadway show tune to the 21st century. Performing a rendition of "The Music Man," which Jackman claims may have been the first hip-hop song ever written, the two rappers brought laughs to the crowd and viewing audience at home. Jackman himself spits alongside the two legends as well.
"The Music Man" was created by Meredith Wilson. The play follows Harold Hill, a con artist who poses as a boys' band organizer and sells band instruments and uniforms to naive Iowa townsfolk, promising to train the members of the new band. But Harold is no musician and plans to skip town without giving any lessons. The show won five Tony awards in 1957 and continues to be produced until this day.
