Nas' influential debut album, Illmatic, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and on top of a special reissue of the album, a documentary on the project will also see release. Time is Illmatic which centers around the making of the album, as well as the impact on rap since its release, will officially debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, April 16th.
Nas himself commented on the organizer's choice to screen the film in a recent statement.
"I want to thank the Tribeca Film Festival for supporting the film with the incredible platform they’ve built over the years," he said. "It’s an honor to premiere this film in my hometown. I also want to thank One9 and Erik Parker for their persistence and hard work. Those guys and I come from the same place and era, which gives the doc an authenticity that is important to me. We wanted this film to represent the real, from the storyline all the way down to the directors and producers."
Nas will perform the album in its entirety following the premiere, which he will also be doing on a nightly basis during his upcoming anniversary tour, which kicks of at Coachella.
