21 Savage is a unique character. Now seen as a role model of sorts, 21 started out his career more involved in the streets than in music. Somehow, he worked to shift his public image and is now a changed man. Sure, 21 is still a scary dude and we wouldn't want to get on his bad side but he's now a style icon, a financial inspiration, and an influential personality. As he continues to grow in the ranks of rap's hierarchy, he is also being recognized by GQ as a generally fashionable guy. Catching up with him for an extended feature, GQ got the man talking about his transition from "Robbin' Season to Role Model" in their latest issue.
Some of the most memorable moments from the soft-spoken artist's interview include his comments about Drake. With the Canadian superstar about to drop Scorpion in a few days, 21 praised the man for everything's he's done to elevate young rappers as they come up. Perhaps not getting the props he deserves, Drizzy has become somewhat of a "co-sign king," lending his name to many of the up-and-comers that he thinks warrant the clout. While he may not look up to anybody in the hip-hop world, Savage had nothing but kind things to say about his "Sneakin'" collaborator, saying, "Drake just a genuine-ass good-hearted person. He did a lot of shit he didn’t have to do. He do a lot of shit for up-and-coming rappers, period. I don’t think he get his respect for that. Every fuckin’ year, he pull a new artist up. Ain’t no other artist on his level do that shit."
21 has a point. This year, the Drake stimulus package was passed along to BlocBoy JB and in past years, countless others have gotten their careers pushed as a direct result of their connection to the star. Plus, he copped Savage a Rari for his birthday so how could he not love him? Read the full interview here.
