Coogi is suing the NBA, Nike and the Brooklyn Nets over their "Spread Love" uniforms that honor the late Biggie Smalls.
In a lawsuit filed Wednesday in Manhattan federal court (H/T The New York Post), Coogi claims Brooklyn's 2018-19 Nike City Edition jerseys, featuring a pattern referred to as “Brooklyn Camo,” imitates its distinctive, colorful — and copyrighted designs.
“[The defendants] were well aware that Biggie neither wore nor rapped about anything called ‘Brooklyn Camo,” the lawsuit reads, according to The Post. “But they created, marketed and sold and distributed ‘Brooklyn Camo’ products so as to confuse consumers about the connection between their goods… and Coogi.”
The all black uniforms are highlighted by the controversial Coogi-themed, multi-color "Brooklyn Camo" pattern that runs down the sides of the jersey and shorts and along the sleeve and neckline piping.
The Nets debuted the "Spread Love" Biggie tribute uniforms on November 17, and have worn them in select games since. In total, Brooklyn plans to rock the special edition jerseys for a total of 19 games in the 2018-19 season.
