A few weeks ago, we reported that Big Boi is currently working on his third solo album, and now we know that the upcoming project will be released on Epic Records, and not on Island Def Jam like his other two LPs. While in New York last night to perform at a Grey Goose event, Big Boi caught up with the Huffington Post to shed some light on signing with L.A. Reid's Epic Records.
"I just signed a deal with Epic Records, so I'm back with L.A. Reid and Sylvia Rhone. Got a brand new situation. I signed the deal the day after the first Coachella date, that Saturday."
Reid, who was the founder and CEO of LaFace Records from 1989-2000, signed OutKast to his label in 1992, and again took Big Boi under his wing when he was the CEO of Island Def Jam, signing him to that label as a solo artist in 2008. In 2011, Reid moved to Epic Records, and now he wants to take his longtime protege with him. On his connection with Reid, Big Boi said:
"That's my mentor. He understands my music. And one thing about L.A. Reid, there are no creative restraints. He trusts my ear and let's me make the music I want to make. We love being in business together. That's my big brother."
HuffPo also asked Big Boi about his upcoming album, and he gave about the same response he did when asked last month:
"The album I'm not gonna rush. I wanted to put something out before the end of the year. It depends, because me and Dre got a lot of work to do from now until the end of October. [But] you're definitely going to get some brand new Big Boi material. Two or three singles before the fall."
