Childish Gambino is the latest rapper to sit down with Zane Lowe, and much like Jay Z, Eminem, and Kanye West before him, he tells some very intriguing stories during the sit-down. One tidbit that stood out was the fact that the hook for Gambino's R&B-tinged "3005" was originally written over Drake's "Trophies" beat.
Apparently, Hit-Boy had shopped the beat to 'Bino before Drake, and the rapper had already written some ideas for the instrumental before ultimately taking the song in a different direction.
"Hit-Boy, he heard me sing that hook," said Glover of the memorable chorus to "3005". "That hook was actually supposed to be on Drake's "Trophies" beat. I was like, 'I don't know if it feels right' and then [Hit-Boy] gave it to Drake and Drake made it awesome."
As triumphant as it is, "Trophies" is evidently not the easiest track to write to, as Drizzy revealed that it was held off of Nothing Was The Same when he felt the hook ideas he'd come up with at that point were not quite strong enough.
Perhaps he should have called 'Bino in for the chorus?
