The New Mutants are a staple in the Marvel world. The young counterparts to the X-Men consisted of Cannonball, Sunspot, Magik, Wolfsbane, Warlock, and more. Many of the members of The New Mutants graduated to become X-Men or Avengers, and the team was even led by Cable for quite some time. Fox planned on bringing the team of young mutants to the big screen this year, but the Disney/Fox merger has throw things into a state of uncertainty. Dark Phoenix has already been pushed back twice due to the merger, and now it appears that The New Mutants won't even make its way to theaters.
According to Vanity Fair, the word around Hollywood is that The New Mutants will be relegated to a streaming service. While this is far from confirmed, it doesn't seem unlikely. The film stars Game of Thrones heroine Maisie Williams and it has been advertised as a superhero horror film. It would have been the first of its kind, but it looks like James Gunn's Brightburn will now take that prize (Gunn is bringing a horror film to theaters which is a horror twist on Superman's origin. Imagine Clark Kent was a villain as a child). Disney plans on launching their own streaming service late in 2019, and it looks like that is where The New Mutants will land.
