According to the Chicago Sun-Times, a 24-year-old later identified as rapper Lil Mister was shot and killed in Englewood Friday evening. Those taking a special interest in the Chicago Drill Movement will recall hearing Lil Mister's name, for he played an integral role in pushing the movement to its highest point of visibility; he was also the cousin of the scene's most prominent graduate Lil Durk.
As Vibe has reported, prominent Chicago rappers like Cheese and Kollege Kidd have come forward to confirm him as the John Doe victim without a shred of doubt. Even though Lil Mister was quite young at the time of his passing, he'd been active in the Drill scene since 2012, when his biggest hit "No Lackin" was released. Some would argue "No Lackin" was an important vessel helping break Chicago's codified slang to the mainstream.
Nee Antwon Fields, the 24-year-old's momentum as an artist was often hindered due to frequent issues with the law, highlighted by a speeding violation and a weapon charge. Aside from being Lil Durk's cousin and a cherished member of his community, Fields was also a close friend of Lil Jojo, the rapper many believe Chief Keef falsely eulogized or consorted to kill, leading back to a trail of suspicious Twitter posts. As for the Lil Mister killing, law enforcement officials haven't come up with a single suspect at this early stage.
