Just a few weeks after Tumblr introduced a ban on adult content, Instagram is moving in the same direction announcing a new crackdown on inappropriate content. The move comes after some changes within Facebook, Instagram's parent company. As the breakdown goes, posts that are "inappropriate but do not go against Instagram’s Community Guidelines" will no longer be visible on the explore or hashtag pages.
"For example, a sexually suggestive post will still appear in Feed if you follow the account that posts it, but this type of content may not appear for the broader community in Explore or hashtag pages," the statement reads. The content in question can be anything from sexually suggestive posts to spam or violence. Instagram will still remove content that steps outside of the Community Guidelines but they will be upping its regulation on “low quality" content.
Instagram product manager Will Ruben detailed how the company is being "careful about how we define what's non-recommendable." When determining which accounts should be barred from recommendations, past behaviors of certain accounts are taken into consideration. So if you've already had a post removed from Instagram, your account may be on a ban from having your posts shared on Explore pages or hashtag pages.
