Disney faced some unreasonable criticism after they included a gay character in their Beauty & The Beast live-action remake. The movie still smashed the box office, becoming the 14th highest grossing film of all time. The gay character (LeFou, the villain Gaston's side-kick) had little screen time to display his sexuality though. He dances with a male at one point in the movie and is suggested to have a romantic crush on Gaston, but other than that, his sexuality isn't touched on. Disney was just dipping their toes in the water with that one apparently, because the Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt starring Jungle Cruise will feature an openly gay character coming out.
As reported by TMZ, a test screening of the film took place last week and it features a scene where Jack Whitehall's character comes out to Dwayne Johnson's character. The only issue with the scene that has been reported is that Whitehall doesn't ever actually mention that he's gay. Whitehall plays McGregor and Johnson plays Frank. At one point McGregor tells Frank that his parents have tried to arrange marriages for him with women, but he's not interested in women at all. The film is based in the past, so the arranged marriages and fear of homosexuality tie into the timeline. McGregor continues on to reference his sister, Emily Blunt's character, as being the person in the family that accepts him no matter who he loves. The obvious nod to his sexuality received a warm response from the crowd, although many wondered why Disney tip-toed around using the word "gay."
