A Minnesota high school where fans reportedly displayed a re-elect Donald Trump flag during a recent basketball game has withdrawn from a Martin Luther King Jr. Day basketball invitational.
According to reports, some fans at Jordan High School, described as a "rural overwhelmingly white community," displayed the flag when Roosevelt HS visited Jordan last week. Roosevelt's coach says his team is predominantly black, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Jordan was reportedly scheduled for a matchup against Minneapolis Henry, but with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day basketball invitational being held at Roosevelt, they have since decided not to participate.
The Tribune reports that Henry coach Jamil Jackson says organizers of the invitational were told Jordan "feared something might happen to the players if they came to Roosevelt to play."
Although, Jordan Superintendent Matthew Helgerson says, "Fear was not our reason." Helgerson told the Minneapolis Star Tribune in an email that the team did not want its presence at the event "to detract from the athletes."
