In the 90's, Marvel sold the movie rights to their characters away to studios due to the harsh decline in sales. Fox scooped up the X-Men and Fantastic 4, two monumental heroes in the Marvel comic universe. In the comics, the X-Men are truly at the center of Civil War, and Scarlet Witch is Magneto's daughter. Disney has had to sidestep many narratives such as that one because they couldn't touch characters that other studios had the movie rights too. Now that Disney is set to acquire Fox in a multi-billion dollar deal, the X-Men and Fantastic Four can come home.
Kevin Feige (the mastermind behind Marvel Studios entire movie catalog) recently spoke with Variety, and revealed that Marvel hasn't begun to develop storylines for the X-Men and Fantastic 4. They do hope to start within the next six months though. “We’ve been told it’s looking very, very good and could happen in the first six months of next year,” Feige explained of the heroes. “The notion of the characters coming back is great. It’s nice when a company that created all these characters can have access to all those characters. It’s unusual not to. But in terms of actually thinking about it and actually planning things, we haven’t started that yet.”
