The idea is back on Twitter's radar.

Twitter is considering adding a function that would allow its users to edit old tweets, according to co-founder Jack Dorsey. Seemingly inspired by cancel culture, the feature would allow people to attach context to previous content. The tech mogul spoke of the possibility during a Goldman Sachs event in San Francisco on Thursday.

"One of the concepts we’re thinking about is clarifications," Dorsey told the audience. "Kind of like retweet with comment… to add some context and some colour on what they might have tweeted, or what they might have meant."

"By doing so, you might imagine that the original tweet then would not have the sort of engagement around it. Like you wouldn’t be able to retweet the original tweet, for instance,” he added. "You would just show the clarification, so it always carries around with it that context. That's one approach. Not saying that we are going to launch that but those are the sorts of questions we are going to ask."

Back in 2018, Dorsey had spoken of the platform's fear that such a feature would be abused. “There’s a bunch of things we could do to show a changelog and show how a tweet has been changed and we’re looking at all this stuff but ultimately we need to make sure we’re solving a real problem and solving a use case that people are seeing as friction within the service and making that easy for people to do. We’ve been considering edit for quite some time but we have to do it in the right way.”
