Howard to miss a couple months after today's surgery.

Washington Wizards center Dwight Howard could be sidelined for several months due to a lingering gluteal injury that will require surgery, according to reports. The Athletic's Shams Charania revealed today that Howard will undergo surgery on L4/L5 discs in his spine on Friday and the hope is that he'll return within eight weeks.

Howard, 32, has appeared in just nine games for the Wizards this season.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Howard aggravated a piriformis muscle injury during the Wizards' November 18 loss against the Portland Trail Blazers. In nine games this season, the veteran center is averaging 12.8 points and 9.2 rebounds. Howard had signed a two-year $11 million deal with Washington as a free agent this summer after reaching a buyout with the Brooklyn Nets.

As a team, the Wizards have been a total disappointment. Currently sitting at 8-13 on the season, Adrian Wojnarowski recently reported that Washington has started to deliver teams an impression that every player on their roster, including John Wall and Bradley Beal, are available for discussion in trade scenarios.
