A seemingly unauthorized Drake documentary just dropped in Canada, and select Commonwealth countries. The project titled Drake: Rewriting the Rules, was undertaken by an unacclaimed British director with little else to his credit. Mind you, Netflix wouldn't have embarked on this endeavor without paying due diligence, to all laws of property (concerned). The director submitted the following synopsis to IMDb.
"Discover the untold story of how Drake rewrote the rules and rose from a child actor to become a cultural phenomenon and global musical icon. He is the king of pop and hip hop, combining many musical styles into one mainstream sound."
Under normal circumstances, Drake: Rewriting the Rules would beget a prime slot in Netflix' main banner. Its inconspicuous appearance (out of nowhere) likely speaks to its production quality or lack thereof. And yet, Canadians streamers have the given the documentary a passing grade for several reasons.
For one, the documentary appears to be centered on Drake's upbringing in Toronto, and his passage on the set of Degrassi. Ray Louis puts archival footage to use in order to avoid the restrictive nature of the project: the director operated without an interview or much of a soundboard at his disposal. With that being said, Drake: Rewriting the Rules is by no means, a memoir with lasting value, so enjoy it while it lasts.
