Ryan Shazier suffered a devastating spinal injury in a game last season against the Cincinnati Bengals. The play looked as though it was a routine tackle, however, Shazier hurt his spine to the point where doctors weren't sure if he'd ever walk again. Since then, Shazier has persevered and is walking on his own accord, and now he wants to keep rehabilitating so that he can come back and play in the NFL.
According to Sporting News, Shazier's contract with the Steelers is up in March, although team president Art Rooney II said the team is open to giving him a contract to keep him on the team while he recovers.
"To the extent that he wants to do that, we’re open to working that out," Rooney said.
Back in December, Shazier spoke about his injury and the progress he has made since then, saying: "It was a scary moment for many people. I'm not going to lie, I was one of them. I've learned this was an amazing opportunity for the Lord to show how great He is. It's been a crazy, long journey, but it is not over yet. The best worst part about this journey that I'm on is the unknown. Day by day it's getting better than the day before."
