Saturday, October 27, 2018, marked the date of Turning Point USA’s Young Black Leadership Summit-- an event aimed at gathering the minds of America's young, black conservatives. Attendees engaged in discussion and debate about America's current political climate, mingling with influential figures from the cultural and political scene including Donald Trump Jr. One such figure, however, was not in attendance: Kanye West.
Though his physical presence was not registered, he was "there in spirit," observed TPUSA’s Communications Director, Candace Owens. West is said to have helped designed T-shirts for the summit emblazoned with the term "Blexit," in reference to a movement seeking to free black people from "an emotionally abusive relationship with the Democrat Party," in the words of Owens. “Blexit is a renaissance and I am blessed to say that this logo, these colors, were created by my dear friend and fellow superhero Kanye West,” Owens said as she revealed the merchandise. She went on to comment on the role that Kanye has played in bringing the movement to the forefront. "Kanye West has taken one of the boldest steps in America to open a conversation we have needed to have,” she gushed.
The shirts, a collaborative effort between Owens and West read “Blexit” or “We Free.” They were released in various shades including bright orange, muted lavender, and teal.
