Here’s some good news for pot smokers living in the Garden state. According to Rolling Stone and other various reports, lawmakers in New Jersey are putting in motion a bill that would legalize recreational marijuana use as early as January 2019.
In a public hearing today, the State assembly and Senate committees agreed to advance the bill, which would legalize the possession of one ounce of marijuana for adults 21 years or older. In addition, the bill also allows cannabis delivery services and gives licensed dispensaries the ability to open public “consumption areas.” The law will also set a framework for expunging the records of people with marijuana convictions and arrests. Having gotten passed today’s first hurdle, the bill now awaits a full vote in the Legislature, which could come December 17th, before making its way to the governor’s desk.
While things look to be going extremely well for the bill and the recreational use of pot in NJ, lawmakers admit it could be a little longer than January too.
