DJ Critical Hype is known for delivering masterful and innovative blend tapes. Not too long ago, the Canadian DJ released one featuring Kendrick Lamar and Dr. Dre titled The DAMN. Chronic. In his latest tape, Wu-Chainz: 36 Trap Houses, Critical Hype combines the talents of Georgia rapper 2 Chainz, and hip-hop legends Wu-Tang Clan.
The DJ was commissioned by Atlanta's A3C Hip-Hop Festival organizers to produce the unique mashup. Of his initial thoughts on the project, the DJ said, "I thought the concept was sick and was instantly curious about how it would sound." He went on to share the surprising discovery he made when merging the differing sounds together revealing, “Grinding the project out over the last few months, it became clear pretty quickly 2 Chainz’s witty southern raps sounded right at home over the incredible RZA/Wu production. I always enjoy the process of blending 2 different sounds together to create something new – so having the opportunity to do it with a legendary act like Wu-Tang and one of my favorite artists in 2 Chainz has been an amazing experience.”
The blend has been positively received by Wu-Tang's RZA who wrote, "it’s a bonanza to hear 2 Chainz rip a classic Wu beat. He’s one of the great lyricists from the south that proved lyricism is not regional but based on talent dedication focus and experience,” in a statement. “Whether you’re from the Slums of Shaolin or the Wards of the South, hip-hop is our voice.”
