Wondaland delves into film.

Janelle Monae’s road to world domination persists.

Now the honcho has recently inked a deal with Universal Pictures for the film division of her Wondaland imprint. Deadline reports that Wondaland Pictures has entered a first-look deal with Universal in which they will present the studio with work that focuses on fresh perspectives from newer artists within marginalized communities.

There is an exciting, artistic revolution taking place in our industry, and Janelle and the talented team at Wondaland are at the forefront,” says Donna Langley, Chairwoman of Universal Pictures. “Their forward-thinking, inclusive approach to content and storytelling make them a perfect fit for our studio.”

On the music side of things, Wondaland is known for being home to a roster of some of music’s most eclectic and, at times, underappreciated acts, including Monae, Jidenna, Roman GianArthur, St. Beauty and Deep Cotton.

The executive team includes managing partner Mikael Moore, creative director Chuck Lightning, and executive producer Nate Wonder.

While there is no official word on just what Wondaland Productions will be cooking up for viewing pleasure, you can catch Miss Monae taking part in Universal’s Welcome To Marwen film set to premiere next month. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the film boasts a cast that also includes Steve Carell, Leslie Mann, and Merrit Wever. It follows Carell as Mark Hogancamp, the victim of assault who constructs a miniature World War II village in his backyard.
