Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James will begin filming Space Jam 2 this Summer, which will prevent him from competing in the FIBA World Cup. However, LeBron will still be getting his reps in while on the Space Jam 2 set.
According to The Athletic's Joe Vardon, there are plans to build a full basketball court on the set of Space Jam 2 so the four-time NBA MVP doesn't miss out on his summer training regimen. Michael Jordan did the same when he filmed the original movie.
According to The Athletic, the movie's production schedule was set based on the knowledge that James would not play in the FIBA World Cup this summer. LeBron will also have more extra time on his hands than usual, as he will not be competing in the NBA playoffs for the first time since the 2004-05 season.
Although LeBron has already decided to skip the World Cup this summer in favor of Space Jam 2, he isn't ruling out a return to the Summer Olympics in Japan in 2020.
"Yeah, that's a possibility," James told The Athletic. "It depends on how I feel. I love the Olympics."
Space Jam 2 is set to hit theaters on July 16, 2021.
