Nick Breed was fatally shot in his hometown at the tender age of 24.

Nick Breed was a Baltimore rapper whose song output greatly reflected the social conditions of his community. With tragic irony, The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Breed, whose real name was Dominic Gantt, was rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center after being shot at close range on Sunday Evening; he was pronounced dead soon after.

His sudden death sent shockwaves around Edmondson Village community he called home. Besides holding the distinction of being a buzzing artist with "all-city" credentials, Nick Breed also occupied an important foothold with the younger residents of the Edmondson Village. Lynn Forman, a Baltimore Ceasefire ambassador, who called the Village home, spoke about the tragic repercussion of Breed's death on his pupils.

It puts a dark cloud over all the children who believed that they can get out of the city without losing their lives — that they can do something," said Forman, whose teenage daughters were among those who counted themselves Nick Breed fans. "The hopelessness that this city already has, when you lose somebody like this, it just doubles that."

Baltimore rap crew Creek Boyz offered their sympathies via Instagram, as did several other constituents of the Baltimore rap scene. RIP Dominic Gantt; may his spirit of servitude get passed down to future generations.
