While the beloved seventies are considered a golden age of cinematic horror, and rightfully so, the 2010s have brought out no shortage of excellence. Last year found director Ari Aster making a hell of an impression with Hereditary, a haunting tale of a demonic cult and a family coming undone; with an amazing score from Colin Stetson and cinematography from Pawel Pogorzelski, Hereditary was a true feast for the sense. Now, the acclaimed director is set to return with his upcoming film MIDSOMMAR, which stars Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, VilhelmBlomgran, Archie Madekwe, Will Poulter, and Ellora Torchia.
Today marks the arrival of the first trailer, and it's certainly a terrifying affair. For one, the fact that the film is largely set in daylight sets MIDSOMMAR apart from its peers, and the white aspect ratio bars are a nice touch (though it's unclear whether they will remain a fixture). While plot details are scarce, the trailer depicts some disturbing cultlike behavior, as smiling, Wicker-Man-Esque villagers partake in what looks like a Satanic ritual. Check it out now, and sound off. It looks like Ari Aster's got another one on his hands.
