He has since recanted his claims, according to reports.

The allegations made by the women who appeared on Surviving R. Kelly have formed a legal situation for the R&B icon. While he is reportedly under investigation due to the information that came to light in the documentary series, the singer may be planning to take legal action against the network that produced the controversial content. His lawyer, Steven Greenberg, has recently appeared on ABC News in his defense. During the interview, Greenberg made claims that now appear to have been false.

When asked whether R. Kelly was married to Aaliyah when she was underage, the attorney cited Kelly's ignorance. "He was married to her when she was fifteen. Elvis was married to Priscilla," he said. "My understanding is that she did not claim to be 15 and in order to get married, she had to lie about her age." He also stated,"Well, hopefully, he'll sue Lifetime [...] for defamation because people shouldn't be able to do this to someone."

A video of R. Kelly boasting about his musical protégée debunks this scenario, however. It shows the starlet and the producer in a recording session during which Kelly says, "Right now I'm producing a very talented lady -- a young lady. She's 14, Aaliyah. She's real street."

According to TMZ, Greenberg now says that he "misspoke during the ABC interview, and probably shouldn't have put words in R. Kelly's mouth, as he says he never spoke to Kelly about Aaliyah specifically." He also added, "That was 20 years ago. I didn't know him 20 years ago, I didn't represent him 20 years ago. And, I wasn't invited to any wedding."
