The password managing company Splash Data has has come up with a list that makes the world's future prospects look even more grim than they already did. Although the annual "100 worst passwords" is the kind of list that no one thought we needed, it's here now, just like Merriam-Webster word of the year and so, let's see what it tells us. Here are the top 25:
1. 123456
2. password
3. 123456789
4. 12345678
5. 12345
6. 111111
7. 1234567
8. sunshine
9. qwerty
10. iloveyou
11. princess
12. admin
13. welcome
14. 666666
15. abc123
16. football
17. 123123
18. monkey
19. 654321
20. !@#$%^&
21. charlie
22. aa123456
23. donald
24. password1
25. qwerty123
The first thing that jumps out is how this list is almost exactly the same as last year's. People may change in big ways, but in these small, day-to-day tasks of life administration, people just can't be bothered. After scandals of Russian tampering in elections and credit card hacking on massive scales, you might think that people would smarten up and move on from "password" (maybe try the subtle but genius alternative "notpassword") or "123456." Apparently not. There are some surprises, though. Take "sunshine" at number 8, for one, or the password of republicans-in-denial across the US at number 23: "donald."
The people at Splash Data put together a video that illustrates some of the more surprising entries on the list. Watch it below:
