21 Savage had a phenomenal 2018, killing every feature verse he was on and ultimately, releasing one of his best bodies of work to date, I Am > I Was. The unfortunate part about his arrest this past weekend is that it came exactly one week ahead of the Grammys. The rapper was nominated for two Grammys but unfortunately, he won't be in attendance for the award show. What wasn't revealed is that the rapper was set to take the stage for a surprise performance.
According to Rolling Stone, sources from Post Malone's camp confirmed that 21 Savage was supposed to join the singer onstage during the Grammys to perform their chart-topping single, "rockstar." Post Malone is also scheduled to perform with Red Hot Chili Peppers during the award show. "rockstar" is nominated for Record Of The Year and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.
21 Savage has received a wave of support from many of his peers over the past few days including Post Malone. Posty, who's typically quiet when it comes to political or social issues, shared the petition launched by Black Lives Matter to stop the deportation of 21 Savage. The petition has nearly reached its goal of 400K signatures.
21 Savage was detained by ICE for overstaying his visa. In a statement released by his legal team, he applied for a U Visa in 2017 which gives victims of violent crimes the opportunity to gain a residential status in the U.S.
