The San Francisco 49ers have officially confirmed that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn ACL.

Garoppolo was carted off the field during the fourth quarter of yesterday's 38-27 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs after his left knee buckled right before making contact with cornerback Steven Nelson. Following the game, Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that the team feared Garoppolo had torn ACL and today's MRI revealed the devastating news.

The 26-year old QB signed a five-year, $137.5 million deal with the 49ers this off-season. The team had acquired him in a trade with the New England Patriots during the middle of last season for a second round pick.

In three games this season, Garoppolo threw five touchdowns with three interceptions, as the Niners head into Week 4 with a 1-2 record. Backup QB CJ Beathard is expected to take over as the starter for Sunday's matchup against the 1-2 Chargers in Los Angeles, though the team is reportedly bringing in Tom Savage for a workout.
