Buddy came through The Late Late Show with James Corden as a musical guest to promote his LP entitled Harlan & Alondra. The rapper performed his beast of a track called "Black" assisted by A$AP Ferg. From the very beginning of their performance, the pair took time to express their support for 21 Savage who is currently being detained by ICE following an arrest that surprised his following. View the full performance in the video below.
The young emcee directly denounced 21's likely deportation. "Ayo, stop the deportation of 21 Savage," Buddy states during the instrumental intro. Ferg chimes in real quick by shouting, "Free 21!" Then the scene received a tinge of awkwardness when the crowd reacts with enthusiasm to Buddy's following question: "How many Black people we got in the studio audience tonight?" The applause and cheers intensified while the camera showed mostly non-Black fans turning up before the beat drop.
It must have been strange to deliver lines like Ferg's "strange fruit from a tree" to a crowd who did not appear to understand the reference. Then again, Buddy's chorus bears impact in its simplicity so most people probably get the point. And if they didn't know about 21 Savage or ICE before this event, they surely do now.
