Writer or thinker's block is seldom an issue when rappers step into the LA Leakers' dojo. The Power 106 radio hosts (Justin Credible and DJ Sourmilk) have an invitational with quite the reputation to withhold. Joey Purp, courtesy of Chicago, was the latest emcee to step up to the plate and show out, this time over Tupac Shakur's "Ambitionz Az a Ridah."
"World raised me a sinner, Mama raised me a lover. Daddy raised me that n***a, when I was born I was told, son shine on them n****s. Just left the dealership, I'm heading straight to the dealer," he raps before hitting his stride.
See for yourself:
Joey Purp is fresh off the release of Quarterthing, a project Chance the Rapper touts as an "Album of the Year" candidate. The 14-track album holds the distinction of being the rare contemporary project to feature both GZA and the Abbott RZA in a speaking role.
The Chicago rapper once stated that rappers should strive for neither accord: meaning or flare when they listen to his music. His "Ambitionz Az a Ridah" is a fairly good indication of where he stands as an artist of integrity and style -- why can't we bend to be both those articles of faith?
