With Apple being one of the most iconic corporations in recent memory, their foray into television proved inevitable. And while a tentative Dr. Dre biopic by the name of Vital Signs was certainly poised to be an alluring original series, it would appear that Apple CEO Tim Cook has officially pulled the plug. Given the upcoming Apple INC's intention of providing "family-friendly entertainment," it's no surprise that a Dre-centric series has proven too risque for their liking.
A report from Vulture cites several offending scenes, including "characters doing lines of cocaine, an extended orgy in a mansion and drawn guns.” To be fair, it was not that the specific scenes offended Cook's sensibilities; he simply deemed the adult-oriented too far from his greater vision. In short, don't expect to find any “gratuitous sex, profanity or violence" in Apple's original content.
While viewers have already witnessed a chapter of Dre's history through Straight Outta Compton, a television series would have been a welcome treat for fans. Consider the milestones we might have witnessed, from the crafting of 2001, to the signings of Eminem and 50 Cent, to the Murda Inc Beef. It's unfortunate that Cook deemed the series off-brand; perhaps one-day Dre's tale will surface in full, through a more adult-oriented network like HBO or Netflix.
