Wayne Rooney was weighing his options after a disappointing season with Everton in the English Premier League. The club has aspirations to join the elite 6 clubs in England, and even qualify for a tournament or two, but failed to do so finishing in 8th. The legendary English forward, with a few years of top end football left in him, was considering his player option, but also sent delegates to the United States in May to discuss a potential move to the MLS.
News broke of his decision to play in America next season shortly after he posted a picture of Instagram of him sitting comfortably in a private jet on his way to the "✈️US." The former Manchester United forward signed a multi year deal with D.C. United shortly after Everton disclosed a transfer deal had been reached.
Wayne Rooney will wear the coveted no. 9 jersey for his new club. D.C. United is an MLS original, a team that was founded right before the inception of the league. Rooney has the chance to join Jaime Moreno as a club legend, and hopefully come close to duplicating his production over six seasons. For his part, Wayne seems willing to take on the responsibility:
"It is fantastic to be joining D.C. United at such an exciting time in the club's history with the new stadium opening in just a few weeks," Rooney wrote in a statement. "Moving to America and MLS fulfills another career ambition for me."
