In case you missed it earlier this month, Jazz musician Robert Glasper accused Lauryn Hill of stealing “his friends’ music” during the making of her 1998 album Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. “The one thing you did great, you didn't do!” Glasper said in an interview with a Houston radio station few weeks back, while also mentioning her being harsh on her touring unit (see here). Well of course, there’s always two sides to every story and Ms. Lauryn Hill has finally addressed those allegations in penned statement to Medium Monday night.
“The Miseducation was the first time I worked with musicians outside of the Fugees [whose] report and working relationship was clear. In an effort to create the same level of comfort, I may not have established the necessary boundaries and may have been more inviting than I should have been,” Hill wrote. “In hindsight, I would have handled it differently for the removal of any confusion. And I have handled it differently since, I’m clear and I make clear before someone walks in the door what I am and am not looking for. I may have been inclusive, but these are my songs.”
She later went on to address Glasper straight on, saying “I’m confused as to why such a principled musician, who thought I ‘stole’ from his friends, would show up to work for me anyway.”
Lauryn also revealed that she waited a few weeks to respond to the allegation following the 20th anniversary of her album's release.
