Stargirl is DC's latest live-action adventure series. The show will premier on their new streaming service, which has found success with Titans. DC is taking a risk with this one, digging deep into their catalog of heroes. Starman was created in the 40's as an astronomer with a gravity controlling staff that also gave him a range of cosmic powers. He was reinvented in the early 90's, and passed his mantle onto Stargirl.
As reported by Variety, Joel McHale has been cast as Starman. McHale is known for roles in Community, The Great Indoors and The X-Files reboot. His character will be based on the “Golden Age Starman.” The reference is a nod to the original Starman from the 40's, which means he will be in control of his staff. That also answers the question of how Stargirl's origins will come about. Her character was created in 1999 by Geoff Johns in memorial of his late sister. Johns will also serve as showrunner for the live action series. Variety's synopsis for the series states that Stargirl centers on Courteney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger), a high school sophomore who inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past.
