"I can only imagine how great you would be today."

Today (August 25th) marks the 17th anniversary of the death of Aaliyah, who was tragically killed in a plane crash in 2001 at the age of 22.

Naturally, fans and peers have taken to social media to deliver tributes in the late singer’s honor and Missy Elliott found herself in that mix without question.

Missy decided to upload a video of herself penning a handwritten note that reads, “ Aaliyah, we miss you so much. But your legacy will live on forever and ever!"

In the captions on Instagram and twitter, Missy goes into more detail as she remembers her close friend.

“Aaliyah (Babygirl) I can only imagine how great you would be today winning Oscars & creating music that would be in the year 2050 & setting all kind fashion trends all the things you did while you were here with us,” the rapper wrote on Instagram. “But most of all spreading love is what u always were about your fans have worked diligently in holding u down! & your mom & brother are keeping your Legacy alive! We miss you & to those that knew you or your music know that you will always be A One in A Million Rest peacefully angel Babygirl.”

Missy goes on to cap things off by shouting out the group of friends and collaborators that she and Aaliyah frequently hung around, including Timbaland, Magoo, Ginuwine, and Tweet.,
