There have been a few rumors circulating about the upcoming PlayStation 5 and how it will shake up the gaming landscape. In the last few years, gaming has become even more of a priority for companies like Sony and Microsoft. The two have long been at war with their competing consoles and Sony wants to keep the upper hand with their newest platform.
It's unlikely that we'll be getting the PlayStation 5 this year but it's possible that Sony is gearing up for a 2020 release. In case you're a fan of revisiting some of your favorite retro games, you may be in luck because the company has recently filed for a patent that seems to suggest backwards compatibility.
Sony missed the mark with the PS4 but it looks like we may be able to turn back time with games that were initially created for older models of the PlayStation soon. According to TechSpot, a new patent has been filed by Sony that suggests backwards compatibility with all previous models of the PlayStation. This is something that fans have been asking for and if it turns out to be true, people will surely be delighted. The report reads that the patent would allow for PS5 gamers to run software from legacy devices, meaning that PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games would all work on the upcoming console.
It's worth mentioning that even though a patent has been filed, backwards compatibility may not actually come to fruition. So far, it's all just rumors.
