It's been almost two years since Carrie Fisher died, in December 2016, but that won't stop her from being in movies. Or, more accurately, that won't stop other people from putting her in movies. The legacy of her role as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars movies had long shadow in her lifetime and now, in death, the shadow extends further. JJ Abrams has released a statement addressing how the Star Wars movies will proceed without a living Leia, but a Leia nonetheless:
We desperately loved Carrie Fisher. Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.
So, the late Fisher will be somehow edited into the new film without the help of the holograms that made the resurrection of TuPac possible. The new film, Episode IX, will be released sometime next year, with production on it starting this coming Wednesday, August 1st.
