From the mind that brought you black-ish, ABC is currently prepping to drop off a reboot of the classic television show Bewitched. The network is now looking at a pilot production commitment for the new project, created by Kenya Barris with black-ish writer Yamara Taylor joining on as well.
This project is officially the last one that Barris is to complete under his deal with ABC Studios before he is locked into an exclusive deal with Netflix. The deal was completed just before his contract ended on August 15th.
Originally, Bewitched aired from 1964-1972 on ABC and starred actress Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stevens. The series cemented around Stevens, a witch who marries a mortal ad executive and tries to lead a regular life. Naturally, the show came with its fair share of hijinks.
Barris and Taylor’s twist on the concept will feature Samantha Stevens as an African-American single mother who married Darren, a white mortal man who is something of a slacker. According to Deadline, “they struggle to navigate their differences as she discovers that even when a black girl is literally magic, she’s still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America.”
Barris and Taylor will serve as executive producer through Kenya’s Khalabop Ink Society imprint along with John Davis and John Fox of Davis Entertainment.
