An all-star cast will bring Angie Thomas’s best-selling novel to life.

The first trailer for The Hate U Give premiered at this year's BET Awards, and the footage looks incredible. An all-star cast including Issa Rae, Anthony Mackie, Common, and Regina Hall will bring the story of Angie Thomas’s best-selling novel to life. The young talented actress Amandla Stenberg (who played Rue in The Hunger Games) plays the main character Starr, a high-school student whose life changes the day that she witnesses her unarmed friend Khalil (Algee Smith) get shot by police.

In the trailer, Starr touches on the layout of her neighboorhood, one filled with ethnic beauty. Still, she finds solace at her private school, which is filled with young white students. "Starr doesn't give anyone a reason to call her ghetto," she states while hanging out with her white friends. She escapes from her ethnic surroundings only long enough to catch a breath, and she returns to the culture she loves for a party with Khalil. After leaving the party, young Khalil is shot by police after reaching for a hairbrush in his car, and the trailer gets progressively more emotional from that point forward. Check out the new trailer below, and catch The Hate U Give when it hits theaters on October 19.
