The internet myth is getting a film.

Four years ago, 12-year-olds Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser stabbed Payton Leutner nineteen times in the woods in Waukesha, Wisconsin. The girls were attempting to summon the fictional character Slender Man. Slender Man was created in an online forum as a creepy monster, and the young girls were so mesmerized by the tale they tried to murder their friend in cold blood to prove that the villain existed. Luckily, Leutner escaped and was able to recover in the hospital. Weier and Geyser were found not guilty by reason of insanity, and both were sentenced to serve extended periods in mental hospitals.

Sony is looking to bring the horrid tale of Slender Man to life, even if they are not directly following the true story of the stabbing that took place in Wisconsin. A new trailer for Slender Man tells a different tale. A group of young ladies team up to find their missing friend, and their hunt leads them on a path to Slender Man. Javier Botet stars as the titular character. Botet was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome as a youth, a disease that gives him elongated limbs and fingers. Slender Man is slated to hit theaters on August 10 after being pushed back from a May release.
