New York Giants owner John Mara wants star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to make headlines on the field, not for what he says off the field.
Beckham, who signed a five-year, $90 million contract extension with the Giants shortly before the season started, recently expressed frustration with the Giants' offense and questioned the play of quarterback Eli Manning during a wide-ranging interview with ESPN that included rapper Lil Wayne.
Beckham was later fined an undisclosed amount for his comments, which aired prior to the Giants' Week 5 loss to the Carolina Panthers. The Giants are now sitting at 1-5 on the season. Mara addressed Beckham's comments during a break at the NFL owners meetings, according to ESPN.
"I wish he would create the headlines by his play on the field as opposed to what he says and what he does off the field. I think he needs to do a little more playing and a little less talking."
"I'm still embarrassed being 1-5," Mara said. "I can't stand up here and make any excuses about that. You are what your record says you are, as a wise man once said, and there's nothing I can say to make people feel better about that. I'm suffering just as much as our fans are, probably more."
Coming off a Thursday night loss against the division rival Philadelphia Eagles, the Giants will be in primetime once again in Week 7 as they head to Atlanta for a Monday night matchup against the 2-4 Falcons.
