Although the verdict is in for George Zimmerman in the killing of Trayvon Martin, people are still seeking justice for the act of senseless violence. Thousands of people came together today to rally for justice for the 17-year-old boy, including Beyonce and Jay Z, who attended the New York rally.
Trayvon Martin's mother and brother were also in attendance at the NY rally that took place today, Saturday. Reverend Al Sharpton, and Trayvon's mother, Sybrina Fulton, both spoke to the crowd outside the federal courthouse at the rally, which was organized by Sharpton's National Action Network. This was just one of a hundred rallies that were organized across the U.S., following the not-guilty verdict for Zimmerman.
Beyonce and Jay Z wore "I Am Trayvon" bracelets as they supported the rally, and Bey also posted a message on her website urging people to sign the petition for the Justice Department to open a civil rights case against Zimmerman.
"We are still struggling with the issue of inequality and the lack of value for a Black man's life. Trayvon Martin's most basic civil right, the right to live, was violated," Beyonce's note read.
She continued, "We have made so much progress and cannot allow hatred and racism to divide us. When we all join together, people of all races, we have the power to change the world we live in. We must fight for Trayvon the same way the generation before us fought for Emmett Till."
