Although DC's Aquaman is not doing badly at all in theatres (it's nearing the $1 billion mark), the movie's director, James Wan, is mad at The Academy for what he believes to be a an oversight in their nomination process. The category that he has his gripe with is the VFX shortlist, on which Aquaman was not included, even though pretty much the whole movie is painted in CGI. The other movies that got nominated include: Ant-Man & The Wasp, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Welcome to Marwen, Ready Player One, Christopher Robin, First Man, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Mary Poppins Returns.
Wan's discontent surfaced on Facebook, when he posted in celebration of the movie's release and the visual effects supervisor,Kelvin McIlwain, commented, "it was such an honor to be a part of this creative endeavor and to work with you again. Cheers!!!!" The director replied with indignance towards the Academy: "Kelvin, you and your department are the unsung heroes of this film. The fact that your VFX peers in the Academy aren’t recognizing or appreciating what we/you’ve all contributed to the film and cinema is a fucking disgrace."
